18 November, 17.30- 19.00 The Polluter Elite vs. The Green New Deal, University of Sussex, Brighton
The danger of triggering irreversible environmental damage that spirals, feeding off itself, means that winning too slowly is the same as losing. That’s why rapid, transformative changes are called for to prevent climate breakdown and mass species extinction. There needs to be a rapid economic transition to create the conditions for people to thrive together. Andrew Simms will discuss the core policies of the Green New Deal.
4th December, 10-11.30 WEBINAR: From protest to action: Local governments declare climate emergency, online
Across the world, national and local governments are declaring a climate emergency on the back of dire warnings from UN scientists about the need for urgent and far-reaching action. Within just three months, 42 councils have signed the pledge – representing over 17 million people between them in the UK – and more than 34 million in the US, Australia, Canada and Switzerland.
So what are councils doing to deliver on these pledges? What is working and what is not? What can we learn and share to build momentum for more ambitious action?
Join guest speakers and members of the Alliance team for discussion, sharing and reflection on what local councils can do to address the climate emergency.
